Wakefield Announces Ambitious BID Plans

WAKEFIELD Cathedral has welcomed the Business Improvement District, hopeful that it will boost its role as a cultural centre and focus for community work, as well as providing the opportunity to unite local businesses.With Christmas less than two weeks away both Tony Robinson, Bishop of Wakefield and Jonathan Greener, Dean of the Cathedral applauded Wakefield BID’s ambition to make the city smart and attractive, and welcoming and accessible for all.

“The BID’s aim to have more ambassadors on the streets of Wakefield City Centre is good news for everyone whether it is for shopping, business or entertainment,” said Dean Jonathan Greener.

“Wakefield Cathedral has been central to community life since medieval times and today we strive through our ecumenical and arts work to ensure that everyone feels welcome and safe,” he added.

“Visitors travel from across the UK and further afield to Wakefield as part of the cultural draw of the Hepworth Gallery, Chantry Chapel and the Cathedral.  Many come in groups but some are on their own and to have a friendly face who can guide and signpost them would be a real asset to every business and organization in the city centre.”Having spent more than £6 million on renovation work in recent years the team is keen that Wakefield Cathedral is used by as many people as often as possible.  There are regular day time services, concerts, events and workshops, helping to ensure it remains commercially viable and able to offer ecumenical support and a welcome to all.

“As we approach the celebration of the Birth of Christ everyone here at Wakefield Cathedral welcomes initiatives that ensure it can remain an active hub for community activity and focus for life in the city,” said Bishop Tony.

“It’s welcoming to have Wakefield Cathedral playing their part as an integral member of the business community acting as a uniting force,” said David Owens, chair of the BID.

“Wakefield Bid will officially launch its prospectus there on January 17 and we specifically chose the Cathedral to remind everyone that it is for them regardless of their religious beliefs,.” He added.
