Member Spotlight – Barclays

We were pleased to catch up with Barclays Business Manager, Keith Waddington, to find out why he loves working in the ‘Merrie City’ – that’s Wakefield to you and me!

1. Summarise your business in a couple of sentences

Barclays is a transatlantic consumer and wholesale bank with global reach, offering products and services across personal, corporate and investment banking, credit cards and wealth management, with a strong presence in our two home markets of the UK and the US.

With over 325 years of history and expertise in banking, Barclays operates in over 40 countries and employs approximately 85,000 people. Barclays moves, lends, invests and protects money for customers and clients worldwide.

2. Can you showcase your offering, including an example of a recent project/initiative?

Barclays provides the support you need, whatever your business. We can take care of your bank account, help you manage daily expenses with a debit card, provide savings accounts to suit your needs and a more recent innovation is the Smart Business Dashboard which saves time by bringing your business and banking information together in one place.

The Barclays scale-up programme, running in conjunction with Cambridge University, provides access to some of the best business scale-up thinking in the UK and is a fantastic resource for companies with high growth potential. The programme is specifically designed to help develop organisations managerial skills and setting them up for growth.

3. How long have you worked/been based in the Wakefield District?

I have worked in Trinity Walk branch in Wakefield since it was launched and previously worked in other branches around the Wakefield area.

4. Why the Wakefield District?

Wakefield is a great place to live and work and I love the people and their entrepreneurial spirit. I support some fantastic businesses across the Wakefield area and I know there is a real desire amongst the business community to continually improve the region and increase inward investment.

5. Why did you become a Bondholder?

Joining Bondholders has allowed me to meet lots of new people and to speak to businesses to tell them about Barclays and how we can help their business. It’s also a great forum for keeping up to date on what is happening in the area.

6. What’s next for the Wakefield District?

Wakefield continues to thrive and grow, and I know we support some terrific businesses with their future plans – which can only benefit the local economy. Digital is key for any start-up and we’ll continue to support all businesses with digital teach-ins and cyber-crime events to make sure Wakefield businesses stay well informed and know how to make the most of new innovations and stay safe online.

7. Do you know an interesting fact about the District?

Wakefield was known as the ‘Merrie City’ in the Middle Ages – quite apt today as I find Wakefield people are always friendly and approachable!
